Resident Evil Could Have Its Biggest Opening Weekend Ever With Its New Movie https://ift.tt/kavV1jp Weapons director Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie hits theaters on September 17, and analysts predict it will set a record for the franchise. While the majority of the live-action movies turned a decent profit off of a relatively small budget, Cregger's take on the IP is currently projected to have the best opening weekend by a comfortable margin. That's according to the official publication of the National Association of Theater Owners, Box Office Pro. The survival-horror movie is predicted to bring in between $40 and $50 million in its North American opening weekend, which would be almost double Resident Evil: Afterlife's $26.6 million weekend from way back in 2010. You'll have to wait until next week to see the full trailer for Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the film that tells the story of the phycisist Robert Oppenheimer and his part in the creation of the atomic bomb. And also after that, during the Cold War, as CinemaCon attendees saw Wednesday night. Nolan himself appeared on stage during Universal's presentation to present a sizzle reel of clips from the film to whet the appetites of assembled movie theater owners.

"I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes," Nolan told the crowd, before letting the footage from the film roll.

It began in black and white, with Senator Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.) learning that the Soviets have an atomic bomb of their own. Strauss isn't happy that the US is apparently falling behind in the nuclear arms race.
