On top of adding a new hat-wearing Ditto to the game, the event offers a slew of missions to complete, including two Collection Challenges and a new Timed Research line. These missions will only be available for a limited time, and they dole out some nice rewards, including guaranteed encounters with the new Ditto variants, so you'll want to complete them while they're around.
