With sprites giving everybody a bonus ability, and Overrides fundamentally changing the way the game works in the middle of matches, we've got kind of a large pile of gimmicks that show up in matches at random, if they show up at all. It's made for a disorienting and inconsistent experience that's difficult to strategize for, because there's no real status quo to get used to. It's a big mess, and it seems to be affecting player numbers in a big way, both for the core Battle Royale mode and Fortnite as a whole. The thing about battle royale as a genre is that it's already, by its nature, varied enough from match to match. Ark: Survival Ascended is a fresh take on the original Ark: Survival Evolved, and presents players with many of the same challenges when first starting out. You're dropped into as hostile of an environment as possible and must find your own way to survive the perils of your surroundings. The game offers extremely little in the way of any tutorials, so you basically need to figure everything out for yourself if you want to make it through your first night unscathed.

To avoid any classic beginner mistakes and ensure you survive in Ark: Survival Ascended, we have put together a list of eight tips you need to know to make it through your first few hours.

1. Pick the right starter location

When you first boot up a game in Ark: Survival Ascended, you will be presented with a map that allows you to pick where to spawn. These spawn points won't have any obvious traits about them, as you're looking at a map that is completely unknown to you. However, the one trait all spawn locations do have is a rating of how difficult they are.
