Your first auto-petter and the crafting recipe to make more are sealed away in a cave you've probably passed countless times before. It's the blocked cavern entrance next to Errol's house in The Narrows, southwest of the museum. You need a new spell, Dragon's Breath, to open it, and getting that is no easy task.

Fields of Mistria rewards you with the Dragon's Breath spell as part of completing the Breaking the Fire Seal quest, which you also need to complete to meet Caldarus' human form, enter the Lava Caves and Deep Woods biomes, and unlock Water Sprite Statue sprinklers.
