There are no tidy universalisms here, but for many of us, even most of us, pain is private and domestic. You could think of a mother shouldering burdens alone while her husband is at work. The father in the waiting room while the mother screams with strangers. A woman going to the doctor about an ache, only for him to tell her to lose weight and deny the problem is even happening. All these things are simple clichés--tropes stolen from life and television. When Silent Hill f conjures a woman's private pain, it is with cutting specificity. In one of the most grisly moments of body horror in video games this year (or ever, really), protagonist Hinako turns into an emblem of her own sorrow, her own compliance, her own screaming rage. With It: Welcome to Derry premiering next month on HBO Max, a wave of new toys and collectibles themed around Pennywise and the unlucky residents of Derry are popping up at major retailers. I didn't think the Tubbz Pennywise duck plush could be topped from the perspective of "I cannot believe this exists," but alas, Fisher Price has done it with the new Little People Collector figure set. Available now for $16.19 at Amazon, the Little People Collector It Special Edition Set features Pennywise and Georgie with one arm. Making things even more gruesome is the splash of blood on Georgie's residual limb. Considering the figures are fashioned like toys for toddlers, it's rather hilarious this set exists.
Fisher Price's Little People Collector series debuted in 2019. The licensed sets mimic the style of figures that had been marketed toward kids under the age of five since the 1960s. Fisher Price has released a wide assortment of Little People Collector sets based on popular entertainment IP, but Stephen King's It might be the most "mature" member of the lineup yet. Other contenders include Chucky Doll wielding a knife and Walter White and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad in their hazmat suits. That said, a figure set that recreates the opening scene of 2017's It: Chapter One where Pennywise bites Georgie's arm off is wild.
Each Little People Collector figure is 2.5 inches tall and indeed resembles a children's toy at first glance. But Pennywise is anything but a silly clown. Modeled after his Dancing Clown appearance, Pennywise has a sinister smile and the yellow eyes that signal he's on the hunt. Georgie is wearing his yellow raincoat and has a shocked expression on his face. The paper boat that drifts into the sewer in the opening scene is in his left hand. Unfortunately, Georgie already approached the sewer to retrieve the boat from Pennywise.
The figures are packaged in a collector's box with the film's logo in large red letters and the entrance to the sewer in the background.
