And by "play as Godzilla," I mean you will be taller than the tallest building in Seaport City, and will have the ability to crush every building and build on the map by stepping on it or firing off Godzilla's laser breath. It's similar to how the playable Doctor Doom worked during Chapter 5 Season 4, except you'll be even taller than the giant Doom was. Arc System Works has announced that River City: Rival Showdown will be released worldwide to PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam on October 12. A re-release of the classic Nintendo 3DS sandbox brawler, this version of the game has been updated with tweaked controls, graphical upgrades, and a new online mode in the form of Double Dragon Duel 2023.

This multiplayer mode allows for players to select from a roster of characters from across several River City titles and duke it out, and that cast can be expanded by unlocking several secret characters in the core game. Additionally, the campaign now has new story events, even more paths to choose from, and multiple endings.

Originally released in 2016 on the 3DS in Japan--and 2017 in the rest of the world--River City: Rival Showdown received generally positive reviews at the time. For fans of the beat-em-up genre, this month also has another revival heading to console and PC in the form of Double Drago Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, which puts a new roguelite spin on the 2D side-scrolling action game formula.
