Back in August 2025, Nintendo increased the price of the original Switch console in accordance with ongoing tariffs, but after the US Supreme Court declared these to be unlawful, it didn't hesitate to claim a refund. With the release of its quarterly earnings (April 1 to June 30) for the current financial year, we now have a clear picture of just how much these refunds helped Nintendo, as it recorded a 52% increase in its operating profits year-on-year, totaling $300 million.

It's worth noting that Nintendo didn't reach this figure purely with tariff refunds, as the company says that "solid software sales and the resulting increase in the proportion of software in net sales" also helped. The US tariffs--that Nintendo sued the US government over--were previously recorded as cost of sales, and Nintendo also noted that its gross profit margin increased by 22.0 points to 54.3%.

Just don't expect to see any of this cash trickle back down to the consumers, even with the specter of a class action lawsuit hanging above the company. Filed on behalf of Nintendo consumers, the suit argues that Nintendo has an obligation to pay back customers who purchased hardware and software at an inflated price, but Nintendo has argued against this.

"Nintendo or one of its retailers set a price for each product, and consumers decided whether that price was worth paying," the company's response to the lawsuit reads. "Those who bought Nintendo's products received exactly what they bargained and paid for: a console, game and/or accessory at a price to which both parties agreed."

Nintendo added that it imposed "modest and selective" price adjustments, bearing the brunt of the tariffs. The Switch has also remained at its initial MSRP since launch, but that will change in September when price hikes for the console come into effect, thanks in part to the ongoing components shortage crisis. Sony is also benefiting from tariff refunds, as those helped the PlayStation manufacturer record an increase in operating income for its April - June quarter.
